  • Rene Descartes was born on 31 March 1596 and was a French philosopher, mathematician, and scientist who invented analytical geometry and algebra. Rene Descartes did spend a large portion of his life while working in the Dutch Republic and he also initially served the Dutch states army of Maurice of Nassau, Stadtholder of the United Provinces, and the Prince of Orange. Rene Descartes is considered to be one of the most notable and intellectual figures of the Dutch Golden Age and is also regarded as the founder of modern philosophy. 

    Many aspects of Descartes' philosophy may be found in late Aristotelianism, the resurgent Stoicism of the 16th century, or older philosophers like Augustine. He diverged from the schools in two important ways in his natural philosophy: first, he denied the division of corporeal essence into matter and form; second, he rejected any reference to ultimate purposes, divine or natural, in understanding natural events.     Born on March 31, 1596, René Descartes was born in La Haye, France (subsequently renamed for him, Descartes). Descartes lost his mother when he was thirteen, who died in childbirth. With his father Joachim, a lawyer, living in Châtteleraut, René spent his early years, tillsammans with his older sister Jeanne and his older brother Pierre with his grandmother, Jeanne Sain Brochard in La Haye. Shortly thereafter he relocated to the house of his great uncle, Michel Ferrand, a lawyer and Counselor of the King in Chätterlaut. Sometime in 1606 or 1607, Descartes took up studies at the Jesuit College of La Fleche, remaining there for some sju or eight years. His course of study was not untypical for the time: French, Greek and Latin, Ancient Poetry, Cicero and rhetoric, several years of philosophy (logic, morals, physics and metaphysics), followed by several years of mathematics.

    René Descartes' parents were Joachim Descartes (1563-1640) and Jeanne Brochard (1566-1597). Joachim, the son of the medical doctor Pierre Descartes (1515-1566), studied law and was a counsellor in the Parliament of Brittany which sat at Rennes. Jeanne was the daughter of the military man René Brochard who formed part of the garrison stationed at Poitiers. One of Jeanne's brothers, also named René Brochard, became one of René Descartes'
