    International tribunal for the Rafic Hariri assassination

    The Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL), also referred to as the Lebanon Tribunal or the Hariri Tribunal, is a tribunal of international character[1][2] applying Lebanese criminal law[3] under the authority of the United Nations to carry out the investigation and prosecution of those responsible for 14 February 2005 assassination of Rafic Hariri, the former Lebanese prime minister, and the deaths of 21 others,[4][5][6] as well as those responsible for connected attacks.[7]

    The Tribunal officially opened on 1 March 2009[8][9] and has primacy over the national courts of Lebanon.[10] The Tribunal has its seat in Leidschendam, on the outskirts of The Hague, Netherlands, and a field office in the Lebanese capital, Beirut. Its official languages are Arabic, French and English.[11] The

    Many feared it would happen, and it has. The war in Syria is spilling over its borders, infecting neighboring countries. First, it was Turkey and now it's Lebanon.

    Protests and violence erupted all over Lebanon this weekend after a massive car bomb killed one of the country's intelligence chiefs in Beirut on Friday, Brigadier General Wissam al-Hassan, Lebanon's Sunni-led motstånd figures are blaming the Syrian regime of Bashar al-Assad, and even the prime minister, who heads a fragile ruling alliance with Hezbollah, agrees.

  • BEIRUT — Lebanon’s main opposition bloc stepped up pressure Wednesday on the Hezbollah-dominated government to resign after blaming the Shi’ite militant group’s ally Syria for a car bomb that killed a top intelligence officer.

    The anti-Syrian opposition alliance said Lebanon’s rival groups cannot hold a national dialogue until the government led by Hezbollah and its allies steps down.

    ‘‘The first step to face strife is the fall of this government,’’ said a statement by the March 14 coalition of anti-Syrian parties, read by senior official Fares Soeid.

    ‘‘The government, through its leader and the political groups that back him, takes major responsibility for facilitating the plan of the criminal Assad regime,’’ it added.

    The statement was an apparent reference to what anti-Syrian politicians say is lack of support for investigations into other recent assassination attempts.

    Friday’s assassination of a senior intelligence officer, Brigadier General Wissam al-Hassan, in a car bo
