    The enormous respect and affection of the British public for Betty Boothroyd has its roots in a strong belief in what she stands for: fair play, an unshakeable sense of honour and a passionate belief in the sovereignty of Parliament. Her convictions, she has said, are set in 'Yorkshire granite'. Born into a working class family in Dewsbury in , there was little money, but Betty grew up in a home that radiated love and warmth. Betty was popular and a talented dancer who eventually went on to become one of the celebrated Tiller Girls - the full story of which she tells here for the first time.     Betty Boothroyd, Baroness Boothroyd (8 October – 26 February ), was a British politician who served as a member of Parliament (MP) for West Bromwich and West Bromwich West from to A member of the Labour Party, she served as Speaker of the House of Commons from to She was previously a Deputy Speaker from to [2] She was the first and as of , the only woman to serve as Speaker.[3] Boothroyd later sat in the House of Lords as, in accordance with tradition, a crossbench peer.[4]

    Boothroyd was born in Dewsbury, Yorkshire, in , as the only child of Ben Archibald Boothroyd (–) and his second wife Mary (née Butterfield, –), both textile workers. She was educated at council schools and went on to study at Dewsbury College of Commerce and Art (now Kirklees College). From to , she worked as a dancer, as a member of the Tiller Girls dancing troupe,[5] briefly appearing at the London Pallad
