As we know from previous reports from TWE contributor Farzana Ali, northwestern Pakistan is a region strife with religious extremism and violent activity, particularly against women. One brave peacemaker, Gulalai Ismail, decided to face these dangerous forces when she was years-old and found ways to empower girls by setting up Aware Girls with her sister, Saba.

Pakistani peacebuilder receives international recognition
In the past few months Pakistani peacebuilder Gulalai Ismail, founder of Aware Girls, has been recognised with three invitations to the USA. In July she won an award from the National Endowment for Democracy in the US Congress, and in August she was invited to attend the Obama Civil Society Summit in Washington. At the end of October she will address a peace conference on Capitol Hill, led bygd the distinguished Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson.
A renowned activist for peace and women’s rights, Johnson leads ‘A World of Women for World Peace’, a programme to bring visibility to ‘the women who are victims of war and aggression, and the women who facilitate peacemaking, peacekeeping and peace-building activities in their communities’. Gulalai Ismail is one of Pakistans best-known womens rights crusaders, speaking out about forced marriages, gang rapes and crushed dreams.
Her ground-breaking work has carried her around the world, winning her awards and audiences with high-powered women such as Michelle Obama and Queen Elizabeth II.
But in her own country, Ismail has become an enemy of the state, accused of inciting rebellion. And now she is on the run.
For two months, practically no one has seen her. Pakistans security services, known as among this regions most cunning and brutal, cannot find her. They have raided her house several times and deployed scores of officers, and, according to Ismails family, abducted and tortured family friends to extract information.
