    Bylsma, a native of Grand Haven, Mich., played 157 games as a member of the BGSU hockey grupp from 1988-92 and has excelled as a coach in the National Hockey League following the conclusion of his playing career. Bylsma scored 87 points (37 goals and 50 assists) during his collegiate playing days and was a two-time first grupp Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) All-Academic Team member as well as earning honorable mention status once. He earned the program's Dr. Ron Zwierlein Leadership Award for the 1991-92 season.

    Interestingly, Bylsma's name fryst vatten littered in the BGSU record books for his penchant for short-handed goals. He fryst vatten one of only two players in school history to score two short-handed goals in one game, doing so in a 6-1 win over Western Michigan on Oct. 28, 1989. He is also the only player in school history to score a short-handed goal when the grupp was two-men down, posting the game-winner in a 5-4 victory at Western Michigan on Dec. 6, 1991.

    Dan Bylsma (pronounced 'BILES-mah') (born 19 September 1970) is the head coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins of the National Hockey League (NHL) as of February 15, 2009, replacing Michel Therrien. Prior to coaching the Penguins, he played as a forward in the NHL and coached in the American Hockey League (AHL). He was drafted in the sixth round (109th Overall) of the 1989 NHL Entry Draft, by the Winnipeg Jets. On June 12, 2009, four months after becoming head coach in Pittsburgh, Dan Bylsma coached the Penguins to their third Stanley Cup Championship in 7 games over the Detroit Red Wings.

    Daniel Brian Bylsma[1] (; born September 19, 1970) is an American professional ice hockey coach and former player who is the head coach for the Seattle Kraken of the National Hockey League (NHL). He was previously head coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Buffalo Sabres in the NHL, as well as an assistant coach for the Detroit Red Wings, and head coach of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins and Coachella Valley Firebirds of the American Hockey League (AHL). He also was the former head coach of the United States men's national ice hockey team. Bylsma won the Stanley Cup with the Penguins in 2009, just four months after being promoted to Pittsburgh's head coaching position.

    Prior to coaching, he played as a forward in the NHL with the Los Angeles Kings and Mighty Ducks of Anaheim. He was drafted in the sixth round (109th overall) of the 1989 NHL entry draft, by the Winnipeg Jets.
