How to Treat Hypertension in Patients With Coronary Heart Disease disease.
Abstract
Following a hypertension symposium in Los Angeles in October 2007, a panel was convened to discuss how to treat hypertension in patients with coronary artery disease or with evidence of multiple major risk factors for coronary heart disease. Marvin Moser, MD, Clinical Professor of Medicine at the Yale University School of Medicine, New Haven, CT, moderated the discussion. Jackson T. Accounting for Racial Inequity in Clinical Trials: Dr. Jackson T. Wright Jr. Honored for Reducing Cardiovascular Disease among African Americans
When Jackson T. Wright Jr. MD, PhD, began practicing medicine in the 1980’s, physicians knew that the risks of high blood pressure were greater in African Americans compared to Caucasians. But what was not known was the dramatic difference in effective prevention and treatment strategies between the two patient populations. That’s because the larger clinical hypertension studies included mostly Caucasians. The few, small studies in African-American populations meant that insufficient evidence was available to base major conclusions on treating hypertensive African-American patients.
The groundbreaking, decades-long clinical research by Wright helped physicians create and fine-tune approaches to address hypertension not only among the general population, but also in understanding and controlling the disease among African-Americans. Fo
