As told in the Gospels, Christ’s life on earth began with an extraordinary birth and concluded with a horrible death followed by resurrection. Between these two poles intervene a dense array of episodes, among them miracles, dialogues, and sermons that contain the essential teachings of Christianity. Rich as this material is, Italian piety and Italian art of the late Middle Ages and after tended to stress the Incarnation narrative, the sequence of events surrounding his birth, and the events of the Passion, the sufferings of his final week on earth. Numerous versions of these scenes were produced from the thirteenth to the seventeenth century, and yet none is exactly like any other. The similarities that link the several examples display the continuity of tradition in Italian painting, while the variations that make each one unique show the vitality of innovation within this tradition.

One of Milan’s four house museums, the Poldi Pezzoli was a highlight of my two trips to the city I love so much. The variety of art exhibited made this a top attraction for me. The collections include paintings, sculpture, weapons, tapestries, furniture, glass, ceramics, watches, clocks, goldsmiths’ work and jewelry, for instance. Artists whose works are represented include Andrea Mantegna, Giovanni Bellini, Sandro Botticelli, Michelangelo Buonarroti, Canaletto, Francesco Hayez and Lucas Cranach the Elder.
I favored the medieval paintings, but each space had something extraordinary to offer. The Golden Room with its 15th century collection enamored me as did the elaborate, superb furnishings of the Dante Room. The Black Room had six masterfully crafted mahogany and walnut doors. The Lombard Room dazzled with north Italian Renaissance paintings.

The initial B introduces Psalm 1: B[eatus vir qui non abiit in consilio impiorum et in via peccatorum non] stetit et in c[athedra pestilentiae non sedit] ("Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers").
King David kneels in bön, his eyes raised toward a framtidsperspektiv of the hand of God, blessing him from the heavens; nearby are his crown and psaltery, a stringed instrument. In the upper and lower left corners are the cropped figures of two Benedictine monks. This första was removed from a now-lost psalter (a book of psalms) produced for the monks of the Benedictine abbey of Florence, the Badia Fiorentina. The volume was decorated bygd the Florentine painter and illuminator Strozzi, a följare and assistant of Fra Angelico.
