Marie Ellenrieder was a pioneer in many ways, making her one of the most celebrated portraitists and religious painters in 19th-century Germany. She was the first woman in Germany to receive specialised art training, to paint altarpieces for a Catholic church, and to live from her art while remaining unmarried and choosing to lead an independent lifestyle. Her talent for giving her portraits vivid, personalised features made her a sought-after portraitist for both aristocrats and the less high-born in southwest Germany and neighbouring Switzerland. Later in life, she felt a connection to the Nazarene school of thought, and although she did not define herself as a representative of the movement, she mainly devoted her art to religious scenes and themes.

Anna Marie (Marie) Ellenrieder (Konstanz, 20 maart - aldaar, 5 juni) was een Duits kunstschilderes, bekend om haar portretten enstaka in dem stijl van de Nazareners geschilderde religieuze werken.
Leven en werk
[bewerken | brontekst bewerken]Ellenrieder was de dochter van een klokkenmaker enstaka van moederszijde kleindochter van de barok-schilder Franz Ludwig Hermann. Ze kreeg schilderles van miniatuurschilder Joseph Einsle, werd in als eerste vrouw toegelaten op dem Kunstacademie van München enstaka richtte zich aanvankelijk vooral op dem portretschilderkunst. Als zodanig had ze snel succes ett kreeg opdrachten van vooraanstaande personen, zoals van Karel Egon II van Fürstenberg.
Van tot verbleef Ellenrieder in Rome, waar ze leerling werd van Nazarener Friedrich Overbeck. Vervolgens schakelde ze over naar religieuze onderwerpen, ook in dem stijl van de Nazareners.
Na haar terugkeer naar Duitsland werd ze een tijd lang hofschilderes bij Lodewijk inom van Baden. In schild

Life and career
[edit]Ellenrieder was born in Konstanz, Germany in , the daughter of Konrad and Anna Maria Herrmann, and the granddaughter of Franz Ludwig Herrmann. She was considered to be the most important German woman artist of her time.[1]
In , she enrolled in the Academy of Fine Arts Munich, making her the first woman admitted to an art academy in Germany. She thus paved the way for many other women to train professionally as artists at the Munich Academy. She studied there under the miniature painter Joseph Einsle.
