Youssou N'Dour (French:[jusu(ɛ)nduʁ], Wolof: Yuusu Nduur[juːsuⁿd̺uːɾ]; also known as Youssou Madjiguène Ndour;[2] born 1 October ) is a Senegalese singer, songwriter, musician, composer, occasional actor, businessman, and politician. In , Rolling Stone described him as, "perhaps the most famous singer alive" in Senegal and much of Africa[3] and in , the same publication ranked him at number 69 on its list of the Greatest Singers of All Time.[4] From April to September , he was Senegal's Minister of Tourism.
N'Dour helped develop a style of popular Senegalese music known by all Senegambians (including the Wolof) as mbalax, a genre that has sacred origins in the Serer[5][6] music njuup tradition and ndut initiation ceremonies.[5][6] He is the subject of the award-winning films Return to Gorée () directed by Pierre-Yves Borgea

N&#;Dour was born in the Medina, the very heart of Dakar, in October One of a long line of Tukulor griots, N&#;Dour had grown up singing alongside his mother at religious ceremonies before studying theatre as a ung teenager. Youssou N&#;Dour was born in Senegal to musician parents; he began performing at circumcisions and baptisms while still a child. His first single, &#;M&#;ba,&#; was released when he was thirteen; he became a radio star. By sixteen, with a high, sweet tenor that can cut to the bone, N&#;Dour was the featured vocalist with the Star Band de Dakar.
